Inserting the Microphones

--

In this section you will use the following parts:

  • Pre-constructed ear canals
  • Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Metric Ruler
  • Silicone ears

Now we'll want to insert the microphones into the short end of the canals. A fairly non-destructive, yet strong way to do this is to use hot glue. Be careful to only get glue on the metal casing of the mics and not on the elements in front.

For those of you installing the Sound Professional TFB-2 mics, the process is nearly the same. However, I would fold the mic element at a right angle and slide it into the canal. Then I would fill in behind it with just enough hot glue to keep it in place. Make sure to center the mic element on the inner tube opening. And don't over-glue it such that you get glue on the front of the mic element. That would be bad...

--

Insert the mics into the short end of the canal as shown. Make sure the glue gets distributed and makes a good bond.

As a side note for all you anatomy geeks, the location of the mic element at this point is not arbitrary.

30mm - 5mm = 25mm (plus or minus a "mm")

This just happens to be the approximate length of the human ear canal.

--

Now insert the longer end of the ear canal into the back of the silicone ear.

I should mention at this point that if you haven't already done it, identify which mic is left and which is right. Many of these binaural mic setups use a 1/8" stereo jack, where the L/R channels are fixed. You'd rather get the channels correct at this point rather than at the end.

-- Push the canal all the way in so that the rim of it just matches up with the opening from the outside of the ear.
--

The canal should be fairly well fixed in position at this point. If you wish, you can add a little hot glue to secure it, although the glue doesn't stick very well to the silicone.
